Free Wi‑Fi in a café, hotel, airport or coworking space is handy, but all your traffic goes through someone else’s router. You don’t know who runs it: the venue’s admin, the contractor who set it up, and sometimes the person at the next table.
what HTTPS protects
Almost every site and app uses HTTPS now. That’s the padlock in the address bar: page contents, passwords, messages and card numbers are encrypted, and the network owner can’t read them.
what stays visible
- Which sites you open. A site’s address shows up in DNS requests and at the start of the secure connection, even though the page itself is encrypted.
- Which apps you have. Your bank, email and messenger talk to their own servers, and that’s easy to match up.
- When and how much. The time, the amount of traffic, how long you were online.
look-alike hotspots
Fake access points are a story of their own. Someone names their network almost like the café’s, say “Coffee_Free” instead of “Coffee Free”, and your phone joins it on its own. Through a hotspot like that, someone can show you a fake sign-in page or try to intercept data from apps that don’t check certificates properly.
what a VPN changes
With a VPN, everything is encrypted on your phone first and travels through a single tunnel to our server in Finland or the Netherlands. The Wi‑Fi owner only sees that you’re connected to a VPN and how much data you’re moving. Which sites and apps are inside the tunnel, they can no longer see.
what a VPN doesn’t do
Honestly, about the limits:
- it won’t protect you from phishing: if you type your password into a fake site yourself, a VPN can’t help;
- it doesn’t make you anonymous to sites where you’re signed in;
- it doesn’t replace system updates or paying attention to browser certificate warnings.
a two-second habit
- Joined someone else’s Wi‑Fi? Get through the sign-in page if there is one.
- Turn the VPN on in Happ right away.
- Leaving? Turn it off or don’t bother: the VPN doesn’t get in the way at home either.
The habit is easier to build when the VPN is already installed. The first 3 days are free, and it turns on with one button.
