why a VPN is slow and how to fix it

first check whether the VPN is to blame at all. Then the six causes that come up most often

updated 3 min read

Every VPN adds one more leg to your data’s journey: from you to the VPN server, and from there onward. A good service makes that almost unnoticeable. If things got noticeably slower, first find out where the problem is, then look for the cause.

first: is it the VPN?

  1. Turn the VPN off and run a test on any speed test service.
  2. Turn the VPN on and test again, on the same device in the same spot.
  3. Compare. If it’s just as slow without the VPN, the network is the problem, not the VPN. If it’s clearly worse with the VPN, read on.

1. the server

The farther the server, the higher the latency. Our servers are in Finland and the Netherlands, and depending on where you are and who your provider is, either one may turn out faster. Switch to another server in Happ and compare.

2. Wi‑Fi

More often than not, it’s the Wi‑Fi that’s slow, not the VPN: a router two walls away, or a 2.4 GHz network with more neighbors than free channels. Move closer to the router or join the 5 GHz network if there is one. It usually has “5G” or “5GHz” in its name.

3. mobile data

On LTE, speed depends on the cell tower and how many people are on it. In a city center in the evening it can drop several times over, VPN or not. Only another place, another time or Wi‑Fi will help.

4. two VPNs at once

If your device still has another service’s profile, or a work VPN is running, your traffic may pass through two tunnels. Keep one.

5. background downloads

Updates, photo backups and game downloads share the connection with you. Pause them and test again.

6. an old subscription in the app

We add and change servers from time to time. If you haven’t refreshed your subscription in a while, tap 🔄 in Happ and the app will fetch the current list.

with usThere are no traffic or speed limits. Your speed stays the same however much data you use, and we don’t split plans into fast and slow ones.

if you’ve tried everything

Message support at @vverhsupport with two speed test screenshots, with and without the VPN, taken on the same device. That shows us right away where to look. And if the VPN won’t connect at all, head to the VPN isn’t working.

Speed is best judged on your own connection, not from someone else’s review. That’s what the 3 free days are for.
