how to set up a VPN on Android

Happ from Google Play, a one-tap subscription and two settings that stop your phone from killing the VPN in the background

3 min read

On Android it’s nearly the same as on iPhone: the Telegram bot gives you a subscription, and your phone connects through the free Happ app. There’s one difference. Android likes to save battery and sometimes shuts the VPN down in the background. We’ll show you how to fix that too.

what you need

  • An Android phone or tablet.
  • Telegram, to open the bot.
  • A couple of minutes. The first 3 days are free, no card.

steps

  1. Open the bot @vverhvpn_bot and tap “Start”. Your trial turns on by itself.
  2. Open the vverh app with the button under the message, go to the “connect” tab and choose Android. Happ is first.
  3. Install Happ from Google Play. If your phone has no Google Play, there’s a second button: the APK installer from Happ’s official GitHub page.
  4. Tap “add to Happ”. The vverh subscription appears in the app on its own.
  5. Pick a country and tap the power button. Android asks for permission to set up a VPN connection, tap “OK”.
tipOnly download the APK with the button in the vverh app. Files from random sites could be anything.

keeping the VPN on in the background

Many Android skins close apps that run in the background for a long time. If the VPN switches itself off after a while, do two things:

  1. Lift battery limits for Happ. Settings → Apps → Happ → Battery → “Unrestricted”. The wording varies between phone makers, look for “battery” or “power saving”.
  2. Turn on always-on VPN. Settings → Network & internet → VPN → the gear next to Happ → “Always-on VPN”. Android will then bring the VPN back after a restart.

If your phone has an “Autostart” setting, allow it for Happ as well.

if the “add” button didn’t work

  1. In the vverh app, tap “copy key”.
  2. In Happ, tap + and choose paste from clipboard.

other apps

  • v2RayTun. Free, from Google Play. The subscription goes in with one tap.
  • FlClashX. Free, built on the Clash core, installer from GitHub. Add the subscription under “Profiles”: +, “from URL”.

your parents’ phone

Their phone doesn’t need Telegram. On yours, open the “connect” tab, choose Android and tap “show QR for Android”. Point their camera at the code: a page opens with an “add to Happ” button. If the camera won’t read QR codes, tap “copy key” on your phone, send it to theirs in a message and paste it into Happ there via +.

questions

does a tablet count separately?

Yes, a tablet takes a phone slot. The 199 ₽ a month subscription has two of those plus a computer, and each extra phone or tablet is 39 ₽ a month.

does a VPN drain the battery?

A little more than without it, since encryption is work too. You notice it most on a weak signal, where the phone already spends more power staying connected.

connected, but pages load slowly

First check whether the VPN is to blame with why a VPN is slow. Often the culprit is Wi‑Fi or a busy cell tower.

Try it free for 3 days: install Happ, turn it on and see how your connection behaves. If you don’t like it, just don’t pay.
